No. You can see a dermatologist without a referral.

However, a valid referral is required to claim a Medicare rebate for specialist services.

Under Medicare requirements, a referral is made for the investigation, opinion, treatment or management of a particular condition or problem.

Your referral also provides your dermatologist with relevant clinical information, which may include:

• the reason for referral;

• your medical history;

• current medications and allergies; and

• relevant investigation or test results.

Your dermatologist may correspond with your referring practitioner regarding your diagnosis, treatment or ongoing management.

You can still attend your appointment, but Medicare benefits cannot be claimed for specialist services provided without a valid referral.

You will therefore be responsible for the dermatologist’s full consultation fee.

If you develop a new or unrelated condition, a new referral is required for Medicare benefits to be claimed for the assessment or treatment of that condition.
