Can I claim a Medicare rebate on medical services?
Yes, where the medical service you receive is listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and you meet the applicable Medicare requirements.
What do I need to claim a Medicare rebate?
To claim a Medicare rebate, you must:
be enrolled in Medicare;
hold a current Medicare card; and
meet any specific Medicare requirements that apply to the service provided.
For specialist consultations, this includes having a valid referral for the relevant course of treatment.
What are the Medicare rebates for dermatologist consultations?
As at 1 July 2026, the Medicare rebates for specialist consultations provided in consulting rooms are:
$88.40 – Initial specialist attendance (MBS item 104)
$44.45 – Subsequent specialist attendance (MBS item 105)
Medicare rebate amounts are set by the Australian Government and may change when the Medicare Benefits Schedule is updated.
The consultation fee charged by your dermatologist is separate from the Medicare rebate.
What about other medical or surgical services?
Medicare rebates may also be available for eligible medical and surgical procedures listed on the MBS.
The rebate varies depending on the service provided and the applicable MBS item.
Are cosmetic services covered by Medicare?
No.
Cosmetic services that do not meet the requirements of an eligible Medicare service are not covered by Medicare.
