How much does it cost to see a dermatologist?

Fees for consultations, surgical procedures and treatments are determined by the dermatologist you choose to see.

All fees are subject to change or variation depending on the complexity and duration of the consultation, the services provided, complications encountered, or at the discretion of the dermatologist.

During your consultation, you may ask your dermatologist for a financial estimate detailing the cost of any surgical procedure or treatment before it is performed.

Our usual consultation fees during a single course of treatment are:

• $320.00 – Initial consultation

• $215.00 – Subsequent consultation

Your dermatologist may adjust their consultation fee where the scope, complexity or duration of your consultation differs from a standard appointment.

The usual subsequent consultation fee applies when your dermatologist is continuing to assess or manage the condition for which you are already receiving treatment.

If you ask your dermatologist to assess a new or unrelated concern, perform a broader clinical assessment, or provide care outside your existing course of treatment, a consultation fee of $320 may apply instead of the usual $215 subsequent consultation fee.

This may occur even where the attendance is billed as a subsequent consultation for Medicare purposes.

Some consultations require additional time because of the complexity of the condition, multiple concerns being assessed, or the need for more detailed discussion of treatment options and management plans.

Your dermatologist may adjust their consultation fee to reflect the scope and duration of the consultation. This may result in a higher or lower fee than the usual consultation fee.

Common medical services performed during a course of treatment include:

• Diagnostic biopsy – additional $175

• Solar keratosis cryotherapy – additional $165

• Hydrocortisone injections – additional $155

Other procedures or treatments may attract additional fees.

If you have a valid referral and the medical service is eligible for Medicare benefits, you may be entitled to a Medicare rebate.

Under Medicare requirements, a referral covers a single course of treatment for the referred condition. A new referral is required if you develop a new or unrelated condition and wish to claim Medicare benefits for its assessment or treatment.

The Medicare rebate does not necessarily correspond with the consultation fee charged by your dermatologist.
